Thank you for your interest in helping to support the National Jazz Archive, which will save jazz history for future generations.
The Trustees and volunteers work to organise fundraising events and to apply for grants from funding organisations. But, for the Archive to develop and improve access for jazz lovers to all the wonderful material we hold, we need your support.
We need your help
To maintain current levels of activity, the Archive needs an annual income of at least £25,000. As a charity, we achieve this by donations, legacy gifts and various fundraising events and sales.
Your support will enable the Archive to
- Conserve, catalogue and digitise our collections
- Develop our website so the Archive’s collections can be accessed by researchers, musicians, writers, students and enthusiasts
- Employ skilled staff to manage and develop the Archive to professional standards
Some of these activities can be undertaken by volunteers, but for the technical aspects of conservation, digitisation and website development, we need to employ specialists.
We handle many thousand items, all of which must be stored in conservation grade packaging. As an example, our project to catalogue, conserve and digitise the photographs donated to the Archive by the late Brian Foskett required the indexing of over 3,200 large prints, all of which require storage in special sleeves. There are also an estimated 6,000 smaller prints that need similar protection.
For a typical project at the Archive, £200 will fund some 500 specialist polyester pockets, £260 will help provide up to 30 acid-free storage boxes, and £3,000 will help fund a part-time project archivist.
Your support is vital in helping to fund such work, and in securing the development of your Archive. In turn, you will be supporting and preserving the jazz heritage of the past and ensuring its future.

Donate your music collection
Are your beloved vinyl records and CDs just collecting dust? Have you replaced all those treasured tracks with MP3 downloads?
Since 2007, our partner Rabbit Records has been working with the National Jazz Archive to help people to donate or dispose of their collections of vinyl records and CDs.
Record and CD Collections bring important funds to the Archive
If you would like to donate your collection to the National Jazz Archive then Rabbit Records can facilitate the sale. Gift Aid may be eligible on amounts donated to the Archive following a sale.

Buy our images
The National Jazz Archive holds important photographic collections covering jazz in Britain. Heritage Images represent some of these collections, including those of Denis Williams, Brian O`Connor and Brian Foskett.
Their photography represents a golden age of jazz with subjects including artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, Acker Bilk, Ronnie Scott, George Melly and many others.

These images are available as a range of wall art and photo gifts including framed prints, posters, canvas prints, jigsaw puzzles and other photo gifts – all professionally made and delivered quickly and securely. They can also be purchased for use online and in publications.
With every Archive image purchased from Heritage Images, a licensing fee is paid to the Archive. Have a look at what is available.
Volunteer with us
Volunteering is a rewarding way to help support the National Jazz Archive.
The Archive relies on our volunteers for a wide range of vital activities. Joining the team is a great way to be involved in making our collections accessible to others while gaining valuable experience in an archive environment.
Volunteers in our Loughton Archive
Ideally, volunteers are available for at least one day per week to work in Loughton, Essex, or for some digital work you can do it at home. Some of the following skills and interests would be welcome
- A willingness to learn and interest in making a difference
- Working as part of a team, but able to operate on your own with minimal supervision
- Knowledge of computer applications and a good level of IT skills
- An accurate and methodical approach to inputting data
- Good communication skills
- Familiarity with, or experience of, photography
- An interest in jazz
- Organising events
- Social media and digital marketing
